The tour begins with a pickup from your hotel in Cusco around 9:00 a.m. From there, private transportation owned by BIO ANDEAN EXPEDITIONS takes the group for about 30 minutes to the area near the Temple of the Moon. Drivers with high-level training handle the route safely.
Upon arrival, the hike starts at the Temple of the Moon. One of our expert guides, experienced in leading international travelers in various languages, provides a detailed explanation of this Inca site. The talk covers its historical role in Andean culture.
Next, the group walks for approximately 40 minutes along the Inca Trail to the Monkey Temple. Here, the guide shares insights into the archaeological features, drawing from broad knowledge of Cusco’s tourist paths. The path includes areas with eucalyptus trees and minor water flows.
Continuing for 1 hour and 20 minutes, the trail leads to Inkilltambo, another set of Inca constructions. The guide explains the site’s significance, highlighting connections to broader Inca networks in the region.
After that, a 30-minute walk brings everyone to Machu Choquequirao, an additional archaeological spot on this Inca Trail. The guide offers a thorough overview, emphasizing unique aspects of these remnants.
Finally, another 30 minutes of walking reaches the Domes Camp, which overlooks Cusco. These accommodations provide full comfort, including hot showers amid natural surroundings. A chef prepares a lunch using natural, local organic ingredients.
Before the meal, participants join a demonstration of ceviche, a Peruvian dish, and Pisco Sour, a local drink. This adds an interactive element. Afterward, time allows for rest in the camps. In the evening, a bonfire gathers the group.
Throughout this day, one of our representatives from BIO ANDEAN EXPEDITIONS stays informed about your progress.
Breakfast is served in the domes between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., featuring items made from local organic sources.
The morning involves helping chefs prepare Pachamanca, an ancient Andean dish. This requires digging a hole, heating stones, and placing items like sweet potatoes, beans, yucca roots, chicken, lamb, pork, and trout inside. Covered with herbs and blankets, it’s buried for 3 to 4 hours to cook slowly.
While waiting, the group uses quad bikes, or ATVs, with provided equipment. This 3-hour ride explores nearby areas filled with green spaces. The activity allows viewing of local landscapes up close.
Upon return to the Domes Camp, the Pachamanca is ready for lunch. The meal uses natural ingredients from the Andes, with options for international styles if desired—though this may add costs; consult our BIO ANDEAN EXPEDITIONS reservations team.
After eating, private transportation from BIO ANDEAN EXPEDITIONS, driven by skilled professionals, takes everyone back to Cusco, arriving around 4:00 p.m.
Guides provide detailed commentary during activities, based on their extensive route experience. A representative monitors the itinerary at all times.
Climate Considerations
In Cusco, expect variable weather year-round. Days can reach 68°F in summer (December to March), dropping to 32°F at night. Winter (June to August) is drier but colder, with highs around 59°F. Rain gear is always useful. I once got caught in a sudden downpour without a poncho and ended up soaked—lesson learned to check daily forecasts.
Dressing Appropriately Throughout the Year
For all seasons, layer with breathable shirts under warm jackets. In rainy periods, waterproof pants help. Hats and gloves for evenings. Comfortable boots year-round, but lighter in dry months. Avoid heavy coats in warmer times; they add unnecessary weight.
| Month | Average High (°F) | Average Low (°F) | Rainfall (inches) |
| January | 66 | 45 | 6.3 |
| June | 59 | 32 | 0.4 |
| September | 63 | 39 | 1.6 |
Local People and Culture
People in Cusco are welcoming, often sharing stories about Inca heritage. Many speak Quechua alongside Spanish. Respect customs by asking before photos. A traveler I know bonded over a shared meal, learning about festivals—it’s rewarding to engage politely.
Typical Foods
Meals feature potatoes, corn, and meats in stews. Try quinoa soups or grilled trout. Organic veggies are common. For international, cafes offer pasta or salads, but expect 10-20% higher prices. Our tours use fresh local items, but street vendors sell cheap empanadas around $1.
Where to Eat Cheaply
In Cusco markets like San Pedro, grab fresh juices and sandwiches for under $5. Avoid tourist spots for better deals. Anecdote: I found a hidden stall with amazing potato dishes for pennies—ask locals for tips.
Free Visits
Stroll Cusco’s plazas or hike nearby hills without fees. Viewpoints offer city panoramas. No-cost markets let you observe daily life.
Physical Effort and Health Needs
The tour is easy, with 2-4 hours walking daily on mild paths. Quad biking requires balance but no extreme fitness. Altitude at 4700 meters might cause mild headaches; acclimate in Cusco first. Hydrate well. Those with heart issues should consult doctors. I felt winded at first but adjusted quickly with rest.
The tour begins with a hotel pickup in Cusco at approximately 9:00 a.m. on the first day. Private transportation operated by BIO ANDEAN EXPEDITIONS collects guests directly from their accommodations, ensuring a smooth and convenient start without the need to meet at a central location. The drive to the trailhead takes about 30 minutes.
The hiking sections are easy and suitable for travelers with average fitness. Walks last a few hours per day and are mostly flat or gently sloping, with segments ranging from 40 minutes to about 1 hour and 20 minutes. No steep climbs are involved, but comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Weather in Cusco can change quickly throughout the year. The drier months run from May to September, though rain is possible at any time. Daytime temperatures average around 50°F, with cooler nights at higher elevations. Layered clothing, rain protection, and sun protection are strongly recommended.
The domes at Inkilltambo provide a comfortable overnight experience with beds, hot showers, insulation for cold nights, and clean facilities. Each dome offers privacy and views of the surrounding landscape, combining nature with modern comfort.
Guests participate in the traditional Pachamanca cooking process by helping prepare a ground oven, heat stones, and layer Andean foods such as potatoes, meats, and herbs. The meal cooks underground for several hours, showcasing ancestral Inca techniques and offering a hands-on cultural experience.
Dietary requirements such as vegetarian or gluten-free meals can be accommodated when communicated in advance. Meals are prepared with local organic ingredients, and adjustments are generally made without extra cost. Some international-style dishes may involve an additional fee.
Quad bike activities are conducted on designated trails using safety equipment including helmets. Participants receive instructions before riding, and guides supervise the entire route. First aid equipment is available, and safety is prioritized at all times.
Guides carry a first aid kit and are trained to respond to common issues such as minor injuries or altitude-related discomfort. In case of a serious situation, transportation to medical facilities in Cusco can be arranged. Travelers should bring personal medication and inform the team of any medical conditions in advance.
The tour is suitable for families with children over 8 years old who can manage short walks and supervised quad bike activities. Group sizes are limited, making the experience manageable and engaging for all ages. Age requirements should be confirmed at the time of booking.
Payments can be made via credit card, bank transfer, or PayPal. A pre-payment is required to secure the booking, with the balance paid according to instructions sent after confirmation. All payments are handled securely through BIO ANDEAN EXPEDITIONS.
An evening bonfire is organized at the domes camp, providing warmth and a relaxing space to unwind after the day’s activities. Hot drinks are often served, and participation is optional. The bonfire creates a welcoming and social atmosphere.
All entrance fees to sites such as the Temple of the Moon, Monkey Temple, Inkilltambo, and Machu Choquequirao are included. No additional payments are required on site, as permits are arranged in advance by BIO ANDEAN EXPEDITIONS.
Tour extensions are possible upon request. Additional days or combined tours in and around Cusco can be arranged through the reservations team, depending on availability and itinerary preferences.
Tipping is optional but appreciated as a gesture of gratitude for guides, cooks, and drivers. A suggested amount can be given at the end of the tour to acknowledge their service and expertise.
The tour follows sustainable practices, including the use of local organic food, waste reduction, and respect for archaeological and natural sites. Routes are designed to minimize environmental impact, and guests are encouraged to follow leave-no-trace principles.
