The 3 day/2 night Huchuy Qosco trek is a really enjoyable and not too challenging option that combines spectacular mountain views, the original Inca trails, a community visit and a guided visit to the little known Inca site of Huchuy Qosco which is located in the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. By getting off the beaten path, you get away from all the crowds of the more well-known treks, but still get to enjoy all the amazing things Peru has to offer. The Huchuy Qosco trek is perfect for those on a short time frame or looking for an easier hiking route.

Pick up from the hotel at 05:00 am, we will begin our hike in Tambomachay, just outside of Cusco, our path takes us through high passes, valleys and small communities. With large expanses of grasslands and small lakes (dry in some seasons), the area is home to a wide variety of birds, including Andean geese, partridges and lapwings, as well as a variety of birds or prey, all of which are regularly seen throughout the country.
Our target for today are the Andean villages of Patabamba and Siwas located near a small lake (it dries up in some seasons). Patabamba is a traditional Andean community with a small school and a small plaza; located high above the Sacred Valley, the people here still maintain the customs and traditions of times past and most villagers earn their income from farming and herding llamas and alpacas. As only a few tourists come here, the people are always intrigued to see who has come to visit their village and welcome them with open arms.
Today has two main focuses, learning about the customs and culture of the Andean people and a visit to the Inca site of Huchuy Qosqo. Waking up early, our guide will take us to one of the houses where we will meet a local family. The people are incredibly welcoming and as eager to learn about you as you are about them, they don’t get many visitors to this area and are always interested in meeting you.
After the visit we will head to Huchuy Qosqo. The route follows an original Inca Trail that leads us through a beautiful isolated valley that is full of native plants, flowers and birds. It really feels like another world compared to the high grasslands we have left behind. In total, it takes approx. 2.5 hours to reach Huchuy Qosqo and after a rest and enjoy the views of the Sacred Valley, you will have a guided tour of the site to learn about the Inca people and their culture. In the afternoon we drive into the Sacred Valley to the village of Lamay where we take a bus to Ollantaytambo and then a train to Aguas Calientes.
Upon waking up early, we will take the first bus back to Machu Picchu to enter the site when it opens. We will have a 2-hour guided tour of the site during which you will learn about the Incas and visit all the most important areas of the citadel. After your tour, you will have free time to explore the site yourself and if you have permits to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain. In the afternoon, you will take the train back to Ollantaytambo from where you will continue by bus back to Cusco.

Focus on items that pack small. Statistics show 60 percent of trekkers forget gloves, leading to cold hands at passes.
Residents keep Quechua ways, farming in simple clothes. Villages like Patabamba share school and plaza life. They welcome questions on herding. Anecdote: In Siwas, a family showed alpaca care over tea, making the visit feel real.

What time of year fits best for this 3-day trek?
The dry period from May to September brings fewer rains and clearer paths, making hikes through passes and valleys easier. However, nights stay cold at higher spots. The wet time from November to March shows more plants but slippery grounds; rain gear becomes necessary. Temperatures range from 5 to 20 degrees Celsius daily, and altitude adjustment helps in any month.
How to manage altitude on the route?
At 4700 meters in passes, some feel headaches or tiredness. Drink water often, eat small portions, and the trek’s gradual rise aids adjustment. Guides carry oxygen for quick relief if symptoms appear. Local teas offer mild help; talk to a doctor before for meds if you have past issues, as approximately 35 percent of walkers notice light effects that ease with rest.
Is the trek good for families with children?
Families join if kids over 10 can handle moderate walks of 2.5 to 7 hours. Entry discounts apply for minors, and guides slow the pace for younger ones. Camps and hotels fit families, with meals including simple local fruits. Keep children hydrated at elevation; village visits add interest without too much strain.
What fitness is needed for the activities?
Moderate level works for most, with daily hikes on inclines lasting 2.5 to 7 hours. No hard climbs, but steady walking suits those active regularly. People with joint concerns should check with a doctor. The path allows breaks; good shoes prevent slips on valley grounds.
Can I change parts of the plan? BIO ANDEAN EXPEDITIONS allows shifts like extra time in villages or different meals. Contact before to add elements such as more cultural talks. Costs might rise, but main hikes and Machu Picchu stay. This makes it fit personal needs better.
What money to take along?
Bring soles for tips or small village buys, though chances stay low. ATMs in Cusco before start; dollars exchange there well. Plan $40 USD for extras like photos; cash works in remote spots without cards.
Are there options for vegetarian food?
Yes, the cook prepares vegetarian using local potatoes and grains. Let BIO ANDEAN EXPEDITIONS know early for setups. Organic items mean fresh vegetable dishes; international vegetarian adds fees but provides choices if preferred.
How safe are the remote areas?

What if the start gets delayed?
If pickup waits, tell BIO ANDEAN EXPEDITIONS contacts; they shift without charge. The worker holds or sets later. You still join the hike or adjust visits, keeping the full plan.
Is there signal during the trek?
Coverage varies in valleys, none at high passes. Use Wi-Fi in Cusco or Aguas Calientes hotels. For urgent, guides have devices; the lack of signal lets focus on surroundings.

Extensions work; arrange via BIO ANDEAN EXPEDITIONS for rest in Cusco. Starts at $70 USD per night with breakfast. Gives time to think over the trip without quick leave.
What birds or animals show up?

How to get items like sleeping bags?
Rent from shops in Cusco or through the agency. Pick ones for cold at elevation. Check size before; extras like liners add warmth.
What medical support exists?
The kit handles small needs like blisters; guides know basic care including altitude. Serious cases go to nearby clinics. Get insurance; avoid by adjusting slowly as the schedule allows.
